BILBAO AIRPORT
Bilbao Airport is the most important one in the Cantabrian coast in terms of passengers volume and economic importance. It is the most profitable of the Basque Country. It is 12 kms away from Bilbao.
From Bilbao you can fly to some the countries of the European Union and other destinations within Spain (including the Canary and Balearic Islands). Many of its flights are provided by the company Vueling Airlines.
The current airport terminal, operational since 2000, was designed by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava. It is popularly called La Paloma because it looks like a bird taking flight. The new control tower, also designed by Calatrava is known as The Hawk, because of the way it looks and it is facing La Paloma.
Throughout 2016 it is planned to connect the airport with Bilbao city by underground with line 3. There are also intercity buses that go to the capital on a journey of about 30 minutes. If you choose to rent a car in Bilbao airport, you can get to the city in just 10-15 minutes.
